How to find a cake idea for men suited to your cake-decorating level?
I’ve come up with a system. The cake ideas are presented to you according to their level of difficulty. There are three categories :
What Are Beginner Cake Ideas?
These are the easy cake ideas. If you’ve never decorated a cake before (or only did it once or twice), these are the cakes that you should pay attention to.
- What you’ll find: Beautiful cake ideas that only require basic cake decorating techniques. This is a great place to start your journey.
What Are Intermediate Cake Ideas?
Low Intermediate Baker: If you are confident that you’ve mastered the cake decorating basics, such as how to smooth a cake, but feel like you still have a lot of techniques to learn apart from this foundation, this category is perfect for you.
- What you’ll find: Men’s cake ideas that require both basic decorating skills and one or two techniques that are a little bit more advanced. This is a great place to grow your cake decorating skills.
High Intermediate Baker: If you’ve mastered both basic techniques and several more advanced cake decorating techniques, these cake ideas are made for you.
- What you’ll find: Stunning cake ideas that can be fairly challenging, but are a great place to get even better than you already are.
What Are Advanced Cake Ideas?
If you consider yourself an experienced cake decorator and have mastered most of the decorating techniques, including the use of fondant, then this is the perfect place for you.
- What you’ll find: Showstopping and challenging cake ideas, perfect to sharpen and maintain your skills.
The Grading System
Finally, I’ve also assigned a grade of difficulty to each cake inspiration: 1/5 being the easiest design to 5/5 being the hardest one. The goal is to make the ranking the most accurate possible. You will find this to be particularly helpful if you happen to fall in the Beginner or the Intermediate Cake Ideas categories.

Men’s Cake Ideas for Intermediate Bakers
Here, you’ll find 7 cake ideas for bakers with an intermediate level.
A Man’s Letter Cake
Difficulty Level: 2/5 (Low Intermediate)
Number cakes were really trending at some point, and they still are to some extent, but I don’t understand why letter cakes aren’t because who wouldn’t love a cake spelling their name?
A little guidance
You don’t need to have letter molds to recreate this kind of cake, because who would have the necessary storage space? You can simply bake one or several sheet cakes. Make sure they’re thick enough though, and cut your letters in it following a guide. Yes, that’s not the most economical technique, but now you have just enough spare cake to make cake pops.
A Blue and White Cake For Men.
Difficulty Level: 2,5/5 (Low-Intermediate)
This blue cake is simple yet elegant and would be perfect for a man’s birthday.
A little guidance
To recreate this layered buttercream, once your buttercream cover has set in the fridge, apply a uniform layer of your blue buttercream around the bottom half of your cake.
A Man’s Letter Cake
Difficulty Level: 2,5/5 (Low Intermediate)
This elegant man’s cake is another example of how you could use layered buttercream to create a beautiful design.
A little guidance
Here, you’ll have to repeat the process described with the previous cake design, but using three colors instead of two. Remember, before adding your next layer of buttercream make sure the previous one is perfectly set.
A Doodle Cake
Difficulty Level: 3/5 (Intermediate)
Well, I’m a strong believer that a doodle cake is always a nice idea, especially when I’m making a cake without any special occasion in my mind. I think it makes a really nice attention.
A little guidance
If you’re not comfortable with your drawing skills, you could first draw the doodles with a toothpick for example, and then retrace over the imprint with your buttercream to make it easier.
A “Concrete” Cake for Men
Difficulty Level: 3/5 (Intermediate)
This effect you see on the cake is called concrete buttercream, it’s definitely not the most appetizing name, but I believe it makes a really beautiful men’s cake
A little guidance
This design isn’t hard to recreate, you simply have to apply roughly two colors to your cake before smoothing it. Here, you’ll find a quick video tutorial made by Sugar and Sparrow.
A Marble Cake For Men
Difficulty Level: 3,5/5 (High Intermediate)
I love marble cakes because it gives so much character to a cake. This one is particularly elegant. It’s the perfect cake for a man’s birthday.
A little guidance
To recreate this marble effect, roughly put the colored buttercream on a sheet of parchment paper as shown in this quick tutorial, stick it on your chilled cake, and smooth it with your hands. Then put it all in the fridge until the buttercream sets and finally take the parchment paper off.
A Blue and Chocolate Cake
Difficulty level: 4/5 (High Intermediate)
This cake really looks simple, with its chocolate drip and blue buttercream, yet as with every tiered cake it requires quite some work.
A little guidance
Here are three little tips on making sure that your beautiful cake will not collapse. First, you should always make sure your tiers are leveled before stacking them. Next, use cake boards for each tier (you should really do it). Finally, use dowel rods or bubble tea straws in your bottom tier, to help support the weight of the second tier.
Even if it’s only two tiers, I always respect these principles because I’d rather work a little bit more than necessary than be sorry when my cake is on the floor.
Men’s Cake Ideas for Advanced Bakers
Finally, you’ll find 4 complex cake ideas for men for advanced bakers, perfect if you plan on ordering a cake at your local bakery.
A Gamer Cake
Difficulty Level: 5/5
If you’re looking for cake decorating inspiration for a man, you can easily take something he likes as inspiration. It was video games in this case, but it’s only one of the many options available.
A Sport’s Jersey Cake
Difficulty Level: 5/5
Speaking of options, this soccer jersey is another one. For the men in my family (as in most French families), soccer holds a really special place. But the sport you choose to represent really doesn’t matter, you could go for a baseball, rugby or basketball jersey. Simply think of the sports he likes the most.
A Cube Cake
Difficulty Level: 5/5
If you’re looking for something original, while still being quite elegant, this is the cake for you. You’ll definitely have to work for it though, cube cakes are not easy to cover, yet on top of that it’s also a geode cake. Finally, this stunning sugar sail (here’s a quick tutorial) really brings it all together. In one word, this cake is work, but it’s completely worth it.
A Gentleman Cake
Difficulty Level: 5/5
Finally, here is what I called a gentleman’s cake. I thought the suit on the second tier was a really nice idea. As you’ve already noticed, it’s a James Bond cake, but you don’t actually have to stick to the original design, you can make the first tier more classical if you don’t want to make the cake James Bond themed.
