Here, you’ll find 28 Stunning Sonic Cake Ideas Perfect For A Unique Sonic Birthday Party, with tips and tricks to DIY them.

How to find a sonic cake idea suited to your cake-decorating level?
I’ve come up with a system. The cake ideas are presented to you according to their level of difficulty. There are three categories :
What Are Beginner Cake Ideas?
These are easy cake ideas. If you’ve never decorated a cake before (or only did it once or twice), these are the cakes that you should pay attention to.
- What you’ll find: Beautiful cake ideas that only require basic cake decorating techniques. This is a great place to start your journey.
What Are Intermediate Cake Ideas?
Low-Intermediate Baker: If you are confident that you’ve mastered the cake decorating basics, such as how to smooth a cake, but feel like you still have a lot of techniques to learn apart from this foundation, this category is perfect for you.
- What you’ll find: Cake ideas that require both basic decorating skills and one or two techniques that are a little bit more advanced. This is a great place to grow your cake-decorating skills.
High-Intermediate Baker: If you’ve mastered both basic techniques and several more advanced cake decorating techniques, these cake ideas are made for you.
- What you’ll find: Stunning cake ideas that can be fairly challenging but are a great place to get even better than you already are.
What Are Advanced Cake Ideas?
If you consider yourself an experienced cake decorator and have mastered most of the decorating techniques, including the use of fondant, then this is the perfect place for you.
- What you’ll find: Showstopping and challenging cake ideas, perfect for sharpening and maintaining your skills.
The Grading System
Finally, I’ve also assigned a grade of difficulty to each cake inspiration: 1/5 being the easiest design and 5/5 being the hardest. The goal is to make the ranking the most accurate possible. You will find this to be particularly helpful if you happen to fall into the Beginner or the Intermediate Cake Ideas categories.
Growth Tip : This list is great a place to set goals about your cake decorating skills. Pin this post and come back later to tell us how far you’ve come in your cake decorating journey !

How to follow the instructions of the designs.
For the cake designs in the beginner category: I’ll provide written instructions on how to recreate the cake idea presented to you. Don’t hesitate to watch video tutorials about basic techniques, such as smoothing a cake.
For the designs in the intermediate category: I’ll provide some guidance on how to perform the more complicated techniques.
For the advanced category: you are an experienced baker, at this point, and you will find great opportunities to put this experience to use. To be completely honest, I cannot make myself several cake ideas from the advanced category, so trust your abilities and go for it.
Find the perfect sonic cake design for your baking skills.
Growth Tip : If you aim to get better at cake decorating, you should choose a cake idea that feels sligthly above your current cake decorating level. Get out of your comfort zone !
Sonic Birthday Cake Ideas For Beginner Bakers
Here, you’ll find 4 easy Sonic cake designs perfect for beginner bakers.
Simple Sonic Birthday Cakes.

Difficulty Level: 1/5.
What you will need :
- Enough frosting to cover your cake.
- Sonic-themed cake decorations and cake toppers.
How can you recreate this cake?
- First, you must crumb-coat the cake to avoid any crumbs in your final design. Apply a thin and even coat of frosting with your offset spatula all around your cake.
- Smooth it with your bench scraper, holding it at a 45-degree angle on the cake while spinning your turntable. Your bench scraper isn’t supposed to move, only turn the table.
- It doesn’t have to be perfect as it is only the first coat. Chill the cake for 20 to 30 minutes in the fridge (until the frosting sets).
- Then, apply a thicker coat of frosting and repeat the smoothing operation. Fill in any gaps and smooth the cake again. Repeat this operation until the cake looks smooth enough for you. Here, you’ll find a video tutorial of the covering process, if needed.
- Next, chill your cake in the fridge for 30 minutes or until your buttercream cover sets, and use a knife warmed with water if you want sharp edges on your cake.
- Finally, add your Sonic cake toppers and cake decorations.
What you’ve learned :
With the right cake topper, you can make the simplest cake design stand out from the crowd.
Easy Sonic Birthday Cake.

Difficulty Level: 1/5.
What you will need :
- Enough frosting to cover and decorate your cake.
- Sonic cake decorations and cake toppers.
- DIY edible paint + a small paintbrush.
How to recreate this cake?
- First, crumb coat, cover, chill, and cut the edges of your cake as explained in the previous cake design.
- Then, once your buttercream is set, simply dip your paintbrush in your edible paint, and create splatter by pulling back on the bristles with your fingers and releasing it. Repeat until satisfied with the results. Make sure to protect your kitchen as this technique is quite messy.
- Finally, place your Sonic-themed cake decorations and cake toppers.
Simple Sonic Cake.

Difficulty Level: 1,5/5.
What you will need :
- Enough frosting to cover and decorate your cake.
- Sonic cake decorations and cake toppers.
- 4B piping tip + a piping bag.
How to recreate this cake?
- First, crumb coat, cover, chill, and cut the edges of your cake as explained in the previous cake design.
- For the buttercream swirls. You should practice on parchment paper first. Draw the swirls by keeping the piping bag at a 90° angle. Draw circular motions, slowly going upward. Once you’re satisfied with the height, stop piping. You can watch this buttercream swirl tutorial to get a better understanding.
- When you are confident enough, move on to the actual cake. Pipe the first swirl on the edge of your cake. For the next one, draw it straight across from the first. The third swirl has to be placed between the first two. So on and so forth. This allows for your swirls to be equally spaced.
- Finally, place your Sonic cake decorations and cake topper.
Sonic Cake Ideas For Intermediate Bakers.
Here, you’ll find 14 Sonic cake designs perfect for intermediate bakers.
Blue Sonic Cakes.

Difficulty Level: 2/5 (Low-Intermediate).
Adding small fondant elements is a straightforward way to elevate the design of your sonic cake.
A little guidance
To create your own fondant Sonic rings, roll your fondant to a 1/8 inch and cut circles using a cookie cutter. Cut the center of the rings using a smaller cookie cutter or a piping tip. If you don’t have a star-shaped cookie cutter on hand, you can simply print (or draw a star) on parchment paper and use it as a guide to cut your shape with a knife.
Bicolor Sonic Cakes.

Difficulty Level: 2,5/5 (Low-Intermediate)
You can add different colors to your cake to personalize it.
A little guidance
Cover your cake with buttercream as usual and let it set in the fridge. Then, with an angled spatula, add a thin layer of your second color of buttercream on the bottom half of your cake. Smooth it with your cake scraper and let the cake set in the fridge again.
Sonic Cakes For Boys.

Difficulty Level: 2,5/5 (Low-Intermediate)
Buttercream borders are a staple of cake decorating and are an easy way to add an elegant touch to your Sonic cake design.
A little guidance
I personally have a preference for the shell buttercream border, but the swirl buttercream border looks just as nice. You could also have the best of both worlds by using both techniques, one on top and the other on the bottom of the cake like with the second cake. Use a 4B piping tip for a similar result to cake #2 and a 1M piping tip if you want to recreate the first cake.
Simple 3D Sonic Cake.

Difficulty Level: 3/5 (Intermediate).
When it comes to cake designs for children, 3D cakes are always a safe bet.
A little guidance
To recreate this one, cut your fondant using a drawn or printed paper guide to get uniform pieces. Then cover your cake as usual, and place your fondant pieces using toothpicks to make them stand. Finally, print a sonic face, and cut a piece of fondant in the same shape. Stick your picture on it by applying a tiny amount of water on the fondant with a small brush.
Small Sonic Cake.

Difficulty Level: 3,5/5 (High-Intermediate).
A little guidance
All you have to do to recreate this Sonic cake is a buttercream transfer. Simply draw your buttercream Sonic on a sheet of parchment paper following a (printed or drawn) paper guide that you put underneath it. Then, once it has set in the fridge, simply stick it on your cake. Finally, overline the drawing and add the details. Here’s a video tutorial of a buttercream transfer to make the process easier.
Sonic Bento Cake.

Difficulty Level: 3,5/5 (High-Intermediate).
Don’t hesitate to mix the different techniques of this post to create your own Sonic cake, but be careful not to overwhelm yourself.
A little guidance
First, cover your cake as usual and use the previous design to recreate the 3D fondant elements. For the buttercream face, use the buttercream transfer method for the base of the face. Finally, outline the eyes and add the last details (eyes, mouse, and nose).
Black Sonic Sonic Cake.
